The sillar route tour from Arequipa

The Sillar Route is a beautiful journey through one of the most popular quarries in Arequipa, Añashuayco. This quarry is exploited daily to make “Sillar” which is a piece of volcanic rock with which houses are built in Arequipa. In addition to exploitation for construction, Añashuayco offers beautiful sculptures for travelers. Local artisans have carved various impressive political and religious symbols into the rock. This work on the rock amazes the visitors, who do not hesitate to take many photos

Itinerary

Pick up from your accommodation (8:00 am)

We pick up all participants from their hotels. Our pick up area covers the center of Arequipa, Alto Selva Alegre district and Yanahuara district.

Departure to the quarry (8:15 am)

We leave to the Añashuayco quarry along the main road or alternate routes to avoid traffic. During the tour you will see the suburbs of the city.

Tour in Añashuayco quarry (9:00 am)

Upon arrival at the quarry, our guide will buy the entrance tickets and the tour will begin. In the quarry you will learn about the ignimbrite volcanic rock and how people make the “ashlar” from it and how this is used for the construction of houses and sculptures.

Culebrillas canyon (10:00 am)

After visiting the quarry, we will drive 30 minutes until we reach the Culebrillas canyon. In this small canyon we will take a 20-minute walk and at the end of the tour inside the canyon we will be able to see petroglyphs left by the people of the pre-Inca Wari culture.

Return to Arequipa (11:30 am)

After this tour enjoying the “Sillar” and the small canyon, we will return straight to Arequipa and we will leave you at your accommodation.
